CHANGING FUTURES

EDUCATION

In Côte d’Ivoire, Ity supports talent and long-term skills development through initiatives such as the Endeavour Academy, delivered with IN-PHB (Côte d’Ivoire’s leading technical institute), alongside internships and scholarships for promising local students.

The mine’s Adult Literacy Programme has supported 2,000+ beneficiaries since 2018, helping to build confidence, employability and opportunity in nearby communities.

In Senegal, Sabodala-Massawa complements formal education support with practical learning, running adult literacy and numeracy classes and providing bursaries for children of employees, helping families access more stable educational pathways.

At Bellevue in Western Australia, workforce development is built into the operating model, with structured training and an intentional focus on inclusion, supported by a workforce that includes 34.8% women and 6.3% Aboriginal employees (significantly above industry averages).

PLANET-FIRST

ENVIRONMENT

Our ambition is straightforward: reduce emissions fast, protect nature, and prove that responsible gold can be produced with far less environmental impact.

A standout example is Bellevue Gold’s Bellevue Gold Project in Western Australia, which has reported achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2, widely cited as a world first for a gold operation, through a sector-leading, off-grid hybrid power system that combines 27 MW solar, 24 MW wind, and a battery energy storage system. This initiative is supported by high-quality certified offsets for residual, hard-to-abate emissions.

At Sabodala-Massawa, biodiversity protection is a core operational pillar, including a 1,500-hectare ‘No Go Zone’ established to help protect the West African Chimpanzee, alongside habitat measures such as water points for wildlife. At Ity, this includes practical conservation and restoration work, such as reforestation in the classified Krozialé forest and ecosystem protection programmes linked to the adjacent Cavally River, including initiatives to support native fish species.

IMPROVE LIVES

HEALTH

Access to quality healthcare is fundamental to resilient communities. At Ity, health programmes include a targeted anti-malaria strategy delivered with national public-health partners, plus voluntary HIV counselling and testing and community screening initiatives (with 580 people screened in 2023 through a free health-screening programme).

At Sabodala-Massawa, health support includes free screenings covering conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and hepatitis B, helping improve early detection and prevention for both employees and local communities. And at Bellevue, workplace wellbeing is treated as part of safety culture, supported through ongoing training, including mental health first aid and frontline safety leadership development.

EMPOWER COMMUNITIES

SOCIAL

SMO member mines invest in initiatives that strengthen local economies and widen opportunity, particularly for women and underserved groups.

At Ity, community programmes include locally owned co-operatives (such as cassava initiatives that generate $600+/week for participants, with 80% women), alongside deep engagement with local suppliers and businesses.

At Sabodala-Massawa, local empowerment is reflected in a workforce that is 95.3% Senegalese, backed by $2.2m of community investment in 2023 focused on education, health and infrastructure. At Bellevue, the mine’s approach is rooted in partnership, working with the Tjiwarl Aboriginal Corporation through a Native Title Agreement, and reporting significant regional economic contribution (including salaries, supplier spend and community contributions).
