ABOUT THE MINE
With a proud history of producing over 400,000 ounces of gold and a current reserve base of 593,000 ounces, Yanfolila continues to demonstrate its commitment to responsible mining practices.
Leading the charge in responsible gold production, Yanfolila achieved SMO accreditation in 2017, ensuring that your gold is produced in accordance with strict international standards and fully traceable across the processing, refining, and sales chain.
ESG PERFORMANCE
The Yanfolila mine is dedicated to upholding the highest social and environmental standards, exemplified by its membership in the World Gold Council (WGC) and its adherence to the Responsible Gold Mining Principles (RGMPs).
With a focus on sustainable mining, Yanfolila strives to minimize its environmental footprint while maximizing its positive impact on local communities.
Operating in one of the world’s poorest countries, with a GDP per capita of just US$749 (Source: World Bank), Yanfolila plays a pivotal role in effecting tangible social change. Every dollar invested in the mine’s local communities and infrastructure holds significant value, directly improving the lives of those in the surrounding areas.
FAIR WAGE
Yanfolila upholds a commitment to equitable compensation, paying above local minimum wage and benchmarking pay levels against national and global standards.
Recent wage surveys informed site-based salary scales and extended corporate incentive schemes, fostering employee well-being.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Empowering local communities, Yanfolila initiates market garden and poultry farm projects, providing sustainable livelihoods for over 900 individuals, predominantly women.
With focused support, these projects offer preferable alternatives to artisanal mining, enhancing economic stability.
MARKET GARDENS
Supporting 16 villages, market gardens offer sustainable income and agricultural skills, backed by Hummingbird's investment in infrastructure, tools, and training.
POULTRY FARMS
8 poultry farms provide employment and food security, with Hummingbird’s support spanning construction, operation, and training.
BEEKEEPING
From pilot to full-scale project, apiculture initiatives across 8 villages yield economic opportunities and hygienic honey production, supported by Hummingbird’s funding and community engagement.
SOAP PRODUCTION
Addressing community needs, a saponification program empowers women with income generation, expanded with additional stores in response to demand.
HEALTHCARE INITIATIVES
Collaborating with healthcare specialists, Yanfolila tackles health challenges, conducting over 3,000 consultations in 2022. Annual malaria campaigns, in partnership with Critical Care International, protect over 10,000 individuals through Indoor Residual Spraying.
WATER INFRASTRUCTURE
Enhancing water access, Yanfolila’s WASH Programme installs vital infrastructure and provides maintenance training, ensuring clean water access with 48 market garden wells, 14 water towers, and 3 deep-bore holes constructed.
ACCOUNTABILITY
To allow customers and other stakeholders to hold the Yanfolila mine to account, Hummingbird reports on its environmental, social and governance (ESG) activities and performance through its annual Sustainability Report.
