COMMUNITY HEALTHCARE

TRANSFORMING HEALTHCARE IN SENEGAL

Critical Care International (CCI), in collaboration with Endeavour Mining and generously funded by the Single Mine Origin Foundation, is launching a vital new initiative to improve health outcomes for mothers, newborns, and children under five in the Sabodala region of eastern Senegal.

Despite national and regional progress, maternal and child health indicators in rural Senegal remain alarmingly poor.

Women and children face significant barriers to care, with preventable conditions continuing to claim lives.

  • Maternal Mortality in Senegal is approximately 237 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared with just 13.4 in the UK.

  • Neonatal Mortality stands at 21 deaths per 1,000 live births, versus 2.7 in the UK.

  • Under-Five Mortality is 47 per 1,000, while in the UK it is only 3.8 per 1,000.

These figures highlight a stark health equity gap — and an urgent need for action.

The Critical Care International / Endeavour Response:

This project will see the deployment of a skilled, locally engaged CCI doctor-and-nurse team to work with the Endeavour community teams and deliver a comprehensive package of:

  • Community-based health screening, to detect and address common yet life-threatening conditions.

  • Targeted medical interventions, from antenatal care to childhood illness management.

  • Health education programmes, empowering families and community health workers with knowledge to protect health and prevent harm.

This work will be carried out in close partnership with local stakeholders, ensuring sustainability, relevance, and respect for community structures and needs.

Measurable, Sustainable Impact

All project outcomes will be benchmarked against key healthcare-related targets within the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — especially:

  • SDG 3.1: Reduce the global maternal mortality ratio.
  • SDG 3.2: End preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5.

This allows us to report transparently on the lives improved — and saved — through your support.
